You may be one of the increasingly lucky homeowners who are already enjoying electric under floor heating, or it may still be an option to consider. Either way, you want to make sure your bathroom is more comfortable and warm on these frosty mornings and chilly nights.

Two of the best heating accesssories are Warmup’s electic heated towel rails and bathroom mirror demisters.

The ultimate luxury as you step from the shower or tub must be to have a warm towel to wrap yourself in. Warmup’s high quality, stainless steel electric heated towel rails, for when only the best will do, have a rapid heat-up time and are extremely energy efficient, the equivalent of one light bulb.

Warmup’s electric heated towel rails offers superb functionality combined with a sleek design that is easily installed into a new or existing bathroom. Warmup’s electric heated towel rails come with a five-year warranty, giving you security and peace of mind that this is money well spent and makes a beautiful feature in any contemporary or traditional bathroom.

Bathroom mirror demisters will guarantee that your bathroom mirror stays crystal clear no matter how steamy your bathroom gets. The Warmup bathroom mirror demister is made from a flat film that fits directly onto the back of the mirror, suitable with most types of mirrors, existing or newly installed. You simply connect the demister to an existing room light circuit and it will start to work, keeping your mirror steam free once the light is switched on. Warmup bathroom mirror demisters are a safe and simple solution to foggy mirrors.

As part of Big Energy Week (Jan 16-21) we will be joining in with consumer organisations, energy suppliers, switching sites and the government to let you know just how you can lower your energy bills. Improve your home heating and save money by using Warmup electric underfloor heating. In a series of blog posts we will be giving you tips and information on how to you can save energy and money in the home.

Following the publication of the centre for low carbon futures retrofit challenge. Further proof emerged that Warmup’s underfloor heating systems are a fantastic opportunity for homeowners, businesses and landlords to save money and help Great Britain achieve its carbon reduction target for 2050.

The Retrofit challenge: delivering low carbon buildings is a stark and in depth look at the strive for energy efficiency in the UK. With Philip Sellwood the CEO of the energy saving trust going as far as. “If we are to hit our national carbon reduction target of 80% by 2050, almost every building the country will need a low energy make over. Meaning we will have to improve nearly one building every minute.”

Warmup offers a complete range of electric underfloor heating products meaning we are well poised to help reach those targets and the perfect choice for anyone looking for ways to save energy and money in the home.

Electric underfloor heating is a much more energy efficient way of heating due to the requirement that a central heating system must heat the whole house. When using a central heating system accurate zoning control for your heating is much harder to achieve relying on expensive specially made radiators and even then if you are only using one room in the house you are always wasting energy

With a Warmup electric underfloor heating system and a Warmup 3iE™ Energy Monitor Thermostat you get intelligent heating that reduces your carbon footprint and saves you money. The intelligent zoning ability of electric underfloor heating means that your heating plan is programmed to fit in with your life. If you would like a warm bathroom floor when you wake up but require no further heating till you come home from work to a nice warm living room and kitchen then so be it. The Warmup 3iE ™ will deliver a warm efficiently heated home. The 3iE ™ is so advanced that its Self-learning Proportional Adaptive Function can detect the changing conditions in your home. The system will change with the seasons lessening the amount of energy you use in the warmer summer months and make sure you stay toasty and warm on the chilly winter evenings.

As the country moves the goal of reducing the carbon footprint across the UK Warmup provides excellent technologies at the forefront of the underfloor heating industry. Meaning our users live with affordable luxury and efficient energy use; all the while helping to achieve national energy sustainability.

If you are thinking about underfloor heating for your bathroom, kitchen or even your whole house, there is one important need-to-ask-now question (apart from the price): Electric underfloor heating or water-based underfloor heating? To make that choice a lot easier, you need to know the difference between the two and how they would work in your home and with your needs.

Before we get to some of the key differences, let’s define both. Electric underfloor heating uses a series of wires under your floor to heat your home using electricity. On the other hand, water-based underfloor heating uses pipes that circulate warm water, supplied by your boiler, under the floor to heat your home. Now that we got that straight, here are some things you need to consider before you make that all-important choice:

Floor Level: With water-based underfloor heating, there needs to be enough space for the pipes to fit. If not, you’re faced with the not-so-nice-to-look-at elevated floors. Needless to say, this won’t work in a pre-existing kitchen or bathroom. It’s much better suited for new floor construction. With electric underfloor heating, the wires, along with insulation boards, don’t take up as much space, meaning it won’t raise the floor level. Another pretty plus, the wires can fit around tight spaces, such as toilets and sinks.

Installation: Installing water-based underfloor heating requires a professional, such as a heating engineer. Also, the boiler needs to be tested to see if it can support the water-based system. On the other hand, experienced DIYers could install electric underfloor heating mats, the versatile loose wires system, etc. themselves. (See our tips for how to install it yourself.) Bear in mind, a qualified electrician needs to connect your system to the electric mains supply and to fit a sensor to the thermostat (click here for more info on our energy- and money-saving 3iE thermostat). Check out our how-to-install videos.

Installation Expense: Because you need a specialist for the entire installation, water-based underfloor heating is a lot more expensive (we are talking thousands of pounds) than electric underfloor heating. For example, to heat your bathroom, an electric underfloor heating mat system costs £94 for 1.5 to 2 sqm. For more info on heating your bathroom with electric underfloor heating, click here.

Eco Considerations and The Cost: Using a solar water-heating system, you could get the warm water needed to heat your home. However, you would still need a boiler or immersion heater to make the water hotter or to supply the hot water when there are overcast days, which we have a lot of in the UK. Moreover, solar panels need a lot of space on a south-facing roof. Plus, they are heavy so the roof must be strong enough to support them. Lastly, solar panels are quite expensive. We are talking over £3,000 for the panels and installation. Without the panels and using a boiler or immersion heater only, the savings using a water-based underfloor heating are around £20 a year.

Using renewable electricity (derived from windmills, etc.) from suppliers, such as Good Energy, you could heat your home using electric underfloor heating, save money and save the planet. For example, the cost for underfloor heating materials for a bathroom 1.5 to 2 sqm is £295.07 to £306.13 (price includes the 3iE thermostat but not the fee for an electrician). Compare that to the £400+ you’ll spend on the entire installation fee for water-based heating, along with the thousands it will cost for solar panels and for the use of the immersion boiler or heater on those overcast days. Also, you’ll save £25 or more per year on electricity.

Well, we can’t do much about the getting out of bed part. But there is something we can do about that oh-so-cold bathroom floor: bathroom underfloor heating. And the cost? That’s an underfloor heating FAQ we are happy to say has an affordable answer.

For heating under tiled bathroom floors, you can use Warmup’s Electric Underfloor Heat Mat System or the versatile loose wire system for small or irregular shaped areas. Made from the thinnest wire in the industry, Warmup heaters don’t raise bathroom floor levels, so no unslightly raised areas. Also Warmup’s wire-based systems are easily adjusted to fit around objects, such as a toilets, sinks or bathtubs. After all, you don’t need heating under these areas. The mat system required for heating a bathroom floor between 1.5 to 2 sqm would cost: £93.61 to 104.67.

Then you need a smart thermostat to operate your heating, Warmup’s sleek new 3iE thermostat retails for £139.99 and comes in a range of colours. The 3iE lets you programme your heating so that it comes on before you get up in the morning and switches off when you want. It even helps you monitor energy usage so you know exactly how much your warm bathroom floor costs to heat.

The next thing you might want to include are the Insulation Boards. Being water-proof and preventing heat loss, they are perfect for bathrooms (and kitchens). Warmup testing concluded that these insulation boards can cut heat-up times from 2.5 hours to just 20 minutes. That will save you both money and your feet from a chilly blast. Moreover, these boards can lower your overall bathroom floor heating costs by as much as 50 %. That means they can pay for themselves in about two and a half years. Bathroom Floor Heating cost for the insulation boards is: £61.47 for 2 sqm.

The total underfloor heating cost for a 1.5 to 2 sqm bathroom floor with insulation and the latest 3iE Thermostat? Only £295.07 to £306.13!

Plus a lifetime of warmth as all Warmup Underfloor Heating Mats are guaranteed for life!*

If you are about to fit an electric underfloor heater for the first time, boost your confidence with these clever tricks of the trade. Even if you have done this before, a gentle reminder never hurts!

#1 Read Instructions Carefully

This one sounds obvious, but you’ll be surprised how many people fail to read through the manuals beforehand then find themselves in a rut midway through installation. Specific steps can vary from heater type to heater type, and from one brand to another, so make no assumptions.

#2 Check You Have the Right Heater Size

It is imperative you double check that you have the correct heater for your job before fitting. This is because the heating element must never be cut! The heating cable needs to be spaced within a certain range – place them too closely and you risk overheating; spread them too far apart and your floor may not warm up sufficiently.

#3 Prepare with a Dry Run

One great way to set the stage for a smooth-sailing installation is to, well, rehearse. Not only does it help you to become familiar with the procedure, it gives you the chance to clarify any questions that crop up before you get started on the real thing. Now’s the time too to tick off all the tools needed.

#4 Test, Test, Test!

Another good installation ethic is to regularly test that the heater is working – before, during and after installation. Companies like Warmup already prompt fitters to do this at various stages in their installation guides, but it’s well worth bearing in mind in any case. Should the heater not work properly, being able to identify a problem at the point of malfunction or damage makes fixing the issue a far more efficient affair.

#5 Protect Exposed Heaters

Sharp tools and heavy objects can damage the heating elements during the installation process, which is why, to help ease the strain, Warmup systems carry a reassuring SafetyNet Installation Guarantee that insures installers against fitting accidents. If there is going to be a time delay between the element going down and the finished floor being fitted, ensure that the exposed elements are protected by covering exposed heaters with lightweight cardboard or alike, to buffer against footfall and dropped equipment. Make sure to retest the heaters to ensure that elements have not been damaged in any way once the finished floor is ready to be fitted.

#6 Leave the Thermostat Connection to an Electrician

Current British regulations require that wiring of the thermostat be conducted by a qualified electrician. Not complying could invalidate any warranties that came with the heaters, including the Lifetime Warranty that Warmup offers on some of their products.

#7 Do Not Turn The Heater On Too Soon

Be sure to allow enough drying time if screeding over the heater (usually between 1-3 weeks depending on the flexible tile adhesive used and manufacturers’ advice). Switching the underfloor heater on prematurely can result in an unstable subfloor as well as causing damage to the heater.

For a video guide on how to install click here.

#8 Dont panic

As part of our warranties program we offer a safetynet™ installation guarantee on our heating products if something goes wrong you could receive a free replacement.

The benefits of electric underfloor heating and comfortably warm rooms and feet are now widely known. Lesser known however, is how the advantages of floor heating can be extended even further by way of effective insulation.

Extensive research conducted by Warmup on the impact of proper insulation on energy usage has revealed some note-worthy results. Using the Warmup insulation boards in conjunction with same-brand underfloor heaters, floor heat-up time in testing was cut from over 2 and a half hours to just 20 minutes. This translates into a reduction of running costs by as much as 50%!

How does that work?

During the heat-up period, as the floor reaches its set temperature, the heater is running at full power. After this period, the heater needs to run at only half-power to maintain the set temperature. In other words, the faster the floor warms up, the cheaper the system is to run. By properly insulating your floor with Warmup Insulation Board, you can reduce the heat-up period significantly, thereby lowering running costs by up to half. Exact savings will be dependent on the specific conditions of your property and usage.

With electric underfloor heating, the best place to install insulation is right beneath the heating system. The insulating material will stop the heat from spreading downwards, reflecting it back up to the floor finish instead. This is particularly pertinent when the subfloor is concrete as a non-insulated base can dramatically delay the heating effects from being felt through the final floor finish.

Warmup currently offers two types of insulation to be used together with their products. The Warmup insulated underlay is a thin yet efficient thermal barrier that also reduces contact noise and resists moisture. It has been specially developed to complement the Warmup Foil Heater under soft and resilient floor coverings such as carpet, vinyl and linoleum.

The Warmup Insulation Board, on the other hand, not only directs the heat to where it needs to be, but doubles up as a sturdy tile backerboard for increased heater stability. Made of extruded polystyrene, the board is faced on both sides with fibreglass mesh embedded into a thin cement polymer mortar. The board is tough and water-resistant and can bear impressive weight loads of 30 tonnes per square metre. It is available in varying thicknesses and is suitable for most applications.

Both insulation products are easily installed and more related information on improving energy efficiency can be found on the Warmup underfloor heating website. Our highly trained consultants are also on hand to provide tailored advice on 0845 345 2288 if you require further help.

When it comes to Christmas gifts, we tend to see red in the credit card bill and less green in the planet-gorging gifts. For the perfect green Christmas gift that’ll save you money, save the planet and spoil you and your loved ones in warmth, go green with electric underfloor heating efficiency from Warmup.

You’re probably thinking, What makes Warmup’s electric underfloor heating the perfect green Christmas gift?

Firstly, with traditional radiators, the warm air rises up as it’s a lot lighter than cold air. Then, it loses most of its heat by the time it reaches floor level. That’s not heat efficient, at all. Think about the money you’re losing to heat lost through windows, walls, ceilings, roofs, etc. With Warmup’s electric underfloor heating, it warms a room from the floor up. So as the warm air rises, it releases its heat, making it the most efficient electric heating option.

Secondly, you don’t have to heat your whole house. Warmup’s electric underfloor heating can be installed in any room or rooms of your choice. After all, there is always one place you’d love more heat in, such as the forever-freezing bathroom. There’s no point in heating a room that isn’t being used.

Thirdly, Warmup’s 3iE Energy Monitor Thermostat really boosts up the electric underfloor heating’s efficiency. It’s the first interactive thermostat that actually tells you in a graph how much energy you consume vs. the cost. That way you’ll know exactly how much it’s costing to heat your home. The 3iE Energy Monitor Thermostat also comes with a handy Active Energy Management, the first of its kind, that lets you test lower energy consumption levels. Saving you up to 10 per cent in cost and saving the planet from wasted energy, that’s truly the green Christmas gift that keeps on giving green.

If you’re wondering how much Warmup’s electric underfloor heating would cost to, let’s say, heat a bathroom, stay tuned for next week’s post!
