Before we get to some of the key differences, let’s define both. Electric underfloor heating uses a series of wires under your floor to heat your home using electricity. On the other hand, water-based underfloor heating uses pipes that circulate warm water, supplied by your boiler, under the floor to heat your home. Now that we got that straight, here are some things you need to consider before you make that all-important choice:

Floor Level: With water-based underfloor heating, there needs to be enough space for the pipes to fit. If not, you’re faced with the not-so-nice-to-look-at elevated floors. Needless to say, this won’t work in a pre-existing kitchen or bathroom. It’s much better suited for new floor construction. With electric underfloor heating, the wires, along with insulation boards, don’t take up as much space, meaning it won’t raise the floor level. Another pretty plus, the wires can fit around tight spaces, such as toilets and sinks.

Installation: Installing water-based underfloor heating requires a professional, such as a heating engineer. Also, the boiler needs to be tested to see if it can support the water-based system. On the other hand, experienced DIYers could install electric underfloor heating mats, the versatile loose wires system, etc. themselves. (See our tips for how to install it yourself.) Bear in mind, a qualified electrician needs to connect your system to the electric mains supply and to fit a sensor to the thermostat (click here for more info on our energy- and money-saving 3iE thermostat). Installation Expense: Because you need a specialist for the entire installation, water-based underfloor heating is a lot more expensive (we are talking thousands of pounds) than electric underfloor heating. Eco Considerations and The Cost: Using a solar water-heating system, you could get the warm water needed to heat your home. However, you would still need a boiler or immersion heater to make the water hotter or to supply the hot water when there are overcast days, which we have a lot of in the UK. Moreover, solar panels need a lot of space on a south-facing roof. Plus, they are heavy so the roof must be strong enough to support them. Lastly, solar panels are quite expensive. We are talking over £3,000 for the panels and installation. Without the panels and using a boiler or immersion heater only, the savings using a water-based underfloor heating are around £20 a year.

Using renewable electricity (derived from windmills, etc.) from suppliers, such as Good Energy, you could heat your home using electric underfloor heating, save money and save the planet. For example, the cost for underfloor heating materials for a bathroom 1.5 to 2 sqm is £295.07 to £306.13 (price includes the 3iE thermostat but not the fee for an electrician). Compare that to the £400+ you’ll spend on the entire installation fee for water-based heating, along with the thousands it will cost for solar panels and for the use of the immersion boiler or heater on those overcast days. Also, you’ll save £25 or more per year on electricity.

For heating under tiled bathroom floors, you can use Warmup’s Electric Underfloor Heat Mat System or the versatile loose wire system for small or irregular shaped areas. If you are about to fit an electric underfloor heater for the first time, boost your confidence with these clever tricks of the trade. Even if you have done this before, a gentle reminder never hurts!

#1 Read Instructions Carefully

This one sounds obvious, but you’ll be surprised how many people fail to read through the manuals beforehand then find themselves in a rut midway through installation. Specific steps can vary from heater type to heater type, and from one brand to another, so make no assumptions.

#2 Check You Have the Right Heater Size

It is imperative you double check that you have the correct heater for your job before fitting. This is because the heating element must never be cut! The heating cable needs to be spaced within a certain range – place them too closely and you risk overheating; spread them too far apart and your floor may not warm up sufficiently.

#3 Prepare with a Dry Run

One great way to set the stage for a smooth-sailing installation is to, well, rehearse. Not only does it help you to become familiar with the procedure, it gives you the chance to clarify any questions that crop up before you get started on the real thing. Now’s the time too to tick off all the tools needed.

#4 Test, Test, Test!

Another good installation ethic is to regularly test that the heater is working – before, during and after installation. Companies like Warmup already prompt fitters to do this at various stages in their installation guides, but it’s well worth bearing in mind in any case. Should the heater not work properly, being able to identify a problem at the point of malfunction or damage makes fixing the issue a far more efficient affair.

#5 Protect Exposed Heaters

Sharp tools and heavy objects can damage the heating elements during the installation process, which is why, to help ease the strain, Warmup systems carry a reassuring SafetyNet Installation Guarantee that insures installers against fitting accidents. If there is going to be a time delay between the element going down and the finished floor being fitted, ensure that the exposed elements are protected by covering exposed heaters with lightweight cardboard or alike, to buffer against footfall and dropped equipment. Make sure to retest the heaters to ensure that elements have not been damaged in any way once the finished floor is ready to be fitted.

#6 Leave the Thermostat Connection to an Electrician

Current British regulations require that wiring of the thermostat be conducted by a qualified electrician. Not complying could invalidate any warranties that came with the heaters, including the Lifetime Warranty that Warmup offers on some of their products.

#7 Do Not Turn The Heater On Too Soon

Be sure to allow enough drying time if screeding over the heater (usually between 1-3 weeks depending on the flexible tile adhesive used and manufacturers’ advice). Switching the underfloor heater on prematurely can result in an unstable subfloor as well as causing damage to the heater.

Extensive research conducted by Warmup on the impact of proper insulation on energy usage has revealed some note-worthy results.  Using the Warmup insulation boards in conjunction with same-brand underfloor heaters, floor heat-up time in testing was cut from over 2 and a half hours to just 20 minutes.  This translates into a reduction of running costs by as much as 50%!

How does that work?

During the heat-up period, as the floor reaches its set temperature, the heater is running at full power.  After this period, the heater needs to run at only half-power to maintain the set temperature.  In other words, the faster the floor warms up, the cheaper the system is to run.  By properly insulating your floor with Warmup Insulation Board, you can reduce the heat-up period significantly, thereby lowering running costs by up to half.  Exact savings will be dependent on the specific conditions of your property and usage.

With electric underfloor heating, the best place to install insulation is right beneath the heating system.  The insulating material will stop the heat from spreading downwards, reflecting it back up to the floor finish instead.  This is particularly pertinent when the subfloor is concrete as a non-insulated base can dramatically delay the heating effects from being felt through the final floor finish.

The Warmup Insulation Board, on the other hand, not only directs the heat to where it needs to be, but doubles up as a sturdy tile backerboard for increased heater stability.  Made of extruded polystyrene, the board is faced on both sides with fibreglass mesh embedded into a thin cement polymer mortar.  The board is tough and water-resistant and can bear impressive weight loads of 30 tonnes per square metre.  It is available in varying thicknesses and is suitable for most applications.
