Tile and stone floors are ideal for use with a floor heating system due to their low thermal resistance and their high thermal mass. Using ceramic tiles and stone with electric on hydronic underfloor heating systems results in a fast heat-up time and efficient operation of the system.

 

RAPID HEAT UP TIME

 

As stone and tile flooring tend to have good thermal conductivity, the floor heats up fast saving energy. The thickness will have an impact on the heat-up time where a thicker tile will take slightly longer to warm-up compared to a thinner one, but there is no significant change in the power output. Depending on the room size and insulation, the floor can heat up in 10-12 minutes based on a 50mm insulation board with a 200w heating system being installed.

 

NOT JUST FOR KITCHENS AND BATHROOMS

 

Even though tiles are most often associated with kitchen and bathroom flooring, this easy to clean and durable surface is great for use in other areas such as corridors and laundry rooms. Underfloor heating will add comfort to these areas too and the control using a room thermostat means that a comfortable temperature is reached when desired, without wasting energy heating a room when it is not being used.

 

TILE UNDERFLOOR HEATING INSTALLATION

 

When installing a floor heating system with tile or stone flooring, flexible adhesive and grout should be used to allow for normal thermal movement. There are a variety of systems suitable for these materials, from electric to water based solutions.

A thing to note, however, is that tiles made from materials such as cork or rubber are normally not suitable for use with underfloor heating.
