In-Screed vs. Above-Screed Underfloor Heating: Which is Best for Your Home?

Choosing how to heat your renovation or new build is a crucial decision. Traditional “wet” (in-screed) systems are installed directly into liquid or sand-cement screed, offering an efficient thermal mass ideal for new builds. Conversely, “above-screed” (dry-fit) systems are the perfect retrofit solution when floor height is limited. Neither is inherently better; they simply solve different architectural challenges.

What are the key differences between In-Screed and Above-Screed UFH Systems?

In-screed systems have a heavy thermal mass, meaning they take two to three hours to warm up but excel at providing a constant, gentle background warmth all day long. Above-screed solutions utilise conductive panels just below the floor finish, warming up in as little as 15 minutes for rapid, on-demand comfort. Choose in-screed for all-day background warmth, or above-screed for instant, on-demand comfort.

Which system saves more on energy bills?

Both are highly efficient. In-screed systems are incredibly cost-effective for homes occupied throughout the day when left at a consistent, low temperature. Above-screed systems are highly responsive, allowing you to use zoned thermostats to heat only the rooms you are actively using. Installing the VLo Ultra-12 Low Build System over an older floor will even reduce downward heat loss by 12%. For maximum optimisation, Warmup Smartcare provides unmatched 24/7/365 support and system diagnostics. Smart controls and proper insulation mean brilliant energy savings, whichever system you choose.

How do installations compare?

Utilising a ‘wet’ installation, in-screed solutions like our Clypso System are the champions of new builds where floor height is unrestricted. However, you must factor in the screed’s weight during the design stage. Screed requires around 21 days to fully cure, and heat must be introduced carefully to prevent compromising its structural strength.

Above-screed systems bypass heavy wet trades entirely for a rapid ‘dry’ installation. The Ultra-12 system, with 35% higher heat output compared to standard systems, adds just 18mm to your floor height preserving ceiling heights, as does our Lo-16 system. Note that raising the floor level impacts your bottom stair; building regulations require you to adjust the remaining staircase steps to ensure uniform height. Above-screed systems deliver a rapid, cleaner installation that protects your home and keeps your renovation moving.

Are there electric underfloor heating options for smaller renovations?

For single rooms like kitchens, wet rooms, or small extensions, electric systems offer incredible, customisable warmth that quickly evaporates surface moisture. If you are laying a new screed floor in these smaller areas, our Inscreed Cable System is an excellent, highly durable electric option designed to be embedded directly into the concrete.

Alternatively, for an above-screed solution perfect for easy retrofitting, our DCM-PRO Heated Decoupling System with integrated floor protection (decoupling) offers flexible heat output based on cable spacing. We also offer a highly efficient low-wattage DCM-PRO cable option suited for homes using solar arrays and battery storage. Electric systems deliver fast, tailored warmth ideally suited for single-room projects, whether embedded in screed or installed above.

What if I have a heat pump?

Heat pumps are most efficient when producing lower-temperature water, making both in-screed and above-screed water systems an ideal pairing. In-screed floors effortlessly radiate this low-grade heat, while above-screed systems quickly push it through your floor finish. Upgrading your heating also means complying with Part L of the Building Regulations, which mandates separate temperature controls (zoning) for individual rooms to prevent energy waste. When paired with thermostat heating controls, our underfloor heating systems ensure your heat pump operates at peak performance.
