What are some of the difficulties in heating an older property?
For many people, historic homes are more desirable than new-build properties. Packed full of characterful details such as high ceilings, sash windows and crown mouldings, period properties can feel cosier in design than modern housing and many European towns and cities feature an abundance of older properties, some of which may be hundreds of years old. But there can also be some obstacles to overcome with older housing stock. In terms of heating an older house for instance, it’s worth remembering that they may not be as well insulated as a newer building: with draughty rooms and single-glazed windows, you may find that the heat produced by your existing heating system may be too easily escaping the house. If you’re interested in updating your period property’s heating system, then an underfloor heating system is a great idea.

What makes the VLo Econna-12 System so suitable for use with original timber floors?
If you live in a Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian home, chances are that the building will still have its original timber floors which typically utilise joists or battens to hold the floor up. Warmup’s VLo Econna-12 Joisted Floor System is an innovative water underfloor heating system that has been specifically designed for retrofitting with both battened and joisted floors. It provides an energy-saving primary heating solution for entire properties and leaves the space between the timber joists free for insulation material and other plumbing and electrical services, making it the ideal choice for installing in period home refurbishment projects.
The Econna-12’s low-profile design also means it will have a negligible impact on existing floor heights whilst its discreet design will allow you to enjoy the unique character of your home without any of the interruptions caused by traditional heating systems such as bulky radiators and visible pipework.
How do I install a water underfloor heating system over my joisted floors?
The VLo Econna-12 Joisted Floor System facilitates quick installation times due to its dry installation method and one-piece panel design. It uses a 12mm heating pipe which is built into the structural floor for fast response times whilst its moisture resistant 22mm chipboard panels feature a built-in diffuser layer which provides an even heat distribution across the entire floor, with no hot or cold spots. The panels can be installed over battens or joists with spacings of up to 600mm centres and feature a fluted exit to ensure an easy transition into the neighbouring panel. And, with no screeding required, the universal panels hold the heating pipe in the optimal position; simply glue and screw down the boards, place the pipes within the grooves and then apply a 6mm ply on top prior to fitting the floor finish. The Econna-12 comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty and is also TRADA certified for its performance.

Will floor heating improve the sustainability of my property too?
Water underfloor heating is a much more energy efficient heating option than traditional central heating. Radiators use a lot of energy to just warm the air of a room whereas a floor heating system uses radiant heat technology to directly heat the people and objects within a space directly. Because of this advanced technology, water systems also require lower operating temperatures than traditional radiators whilst still producing the same level of warmth in a space – dramatically improving heat source efficiency. All UFH systems should be installed alongside good quality insulation materials to reduce heat loss levels as well as a system-dedicated heating controller to provide accurate temperature control and enhanced energy savings.
To improve the sustainability of your home even more, consider installing a water floor heating system alongside a heat pump. A heat pump-powered floor heating system will dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of a property whilst potentially saving you hundred of pounds a year on your energy bills.
