What Are the Electrical Requirements for an Electric Underfloor Heating System?
Before installing an electric underfloor heating system, ensure that the electrical circuit is capable of supporting the total current required by the heating system. The circuit, protective devices, and thermostat should all be correctly sized for the connected load.
Most thermostats have a maximum switching capacity, typically between 15 and 16 amps depending on the model. If the total electrical load exceeds the thermostat’s rated capacity, a suitable relay or contactor should be installed so the thermostat can safely control the system without carrying the full load.
The electrical rating of each heating mat or cable can be found in the installation manual or on the product label. It is important to calculate the combined load before installation to ensure the circuit is correctly designed.
Although many modern thermostats support dual-voltage operation, the heating system must always be connected to the voltage specified for the heating elements. Supplying the incorrect voltage may damage the system and affect its performance or safety.
For safe installation and compliance with local electrical regulations, all electrical connections should be completed by a qualified electrician.
