What Is the Difference Between Radiators and Underfloor Heating?
Although both systems are designed to heat a room, they work in very different ways.
Traditional radiators primarily warm the surrounding air through convection. They operate at relatively high water temperatures, causing warm air to rise toward the ceiling while cooler air sinks to be reheated. This continuous air circulation can create uneven temperatures, with warmer air accumulating near the ceiling and cooler areas remaining closer to the floor.
Underfloor heating, whether electric or hydronic, works by gently radiating heat across the entire floor surface. Instead of relying on circulating hot air, it provides consistent warmth from the ground up, heating people, furniture, and other surfaces before gradually warming the air.
Because heat is distributed more evenly throughout the room, underfloor heating can deliver the same level of comfort while operating at lower temperatures than many conventional radiator systems. This may improve energy efficiency and create a more comfortable indoor environment, depending on the building’s insulation and system design.
